Trampled grasses at the edge of the lake Cloudless skies of lavender and grey Lift me up and show me to the king I recall the heady scent of spring hyacinths It's darker, almost supernatural Can't quite determine what's factual Floating heavy through the foliage Bright white shadows at the dark lake's edge Am I here? Are you there? The faintest little whisper of a godless prayer Autumn water, still reflecting Chattering teeth with arms outstretching Several times I've doubted my own mind Even worse is you denied My existence, the blissful disregard Waiting for forever for my last hurrah Chorus Ephemeral, ethereal Were you ever really here at all? Ghost on ghost, breathless, gasping A cruel rebuttal, everlasting

about

Reverting to the original band configuration, Jez and Paul have at last recorded their version of a modern pop classic. This song was discussed at the very inception of The Flowers of Despair on 17 July 2007 in Cheltenham. However, the band never got round to recording the song nor did it ever feature in any setlist of their live performances.

The original Bryan Adams with Mel C recording was released on 30 November 1998 and reached number 3 in the UK charts. Now on its 25th anniversary, The Flowers of Despair are finally releasing their unique rendition of When You’re Gone.

How We Wrote 'Left at the 'Lake'
We are also releasing the aural evolution of our recently released track, Left at the Lake. From original concept to the band recording session, take a listen to how the song developed over a three month period. The final mixed version is available here: theflowersofdespair.bandcamp.com/album/left-at-the-lake

How We Wrote 'Left at the Lake'

Track 2: Left at the Lake - Original Concept
Paul records initial idea on acoustic guitar playing two strings. Recorded in Birmingham on 8 March 2023. Sent to Rob on 11 April 2023.

Track 3: Left at the Lake - Guitar Progression
Rob takes Paul's very rudimentary idea and develops it into a coherent riff played on acoustic guitar. Recorded in Bristol on 13 April 2023.

Track 4: Left at the Lake - Keyboard Accompaniment
Paul takes Rob's guitar riff and adds a Casio keyboard into the equation. Recorded in Birmingham on 13 April 2023.

Track 5: Left at the Lake - Band Recording Session
The band (Jen, Jez, Rob and Paul) convened in Bristol on 6 May 2023 to record the song and the other tracks on the 'Left at the Lake' E.P. Jez wrote the lyrics and came up with the vocal melody on the day. The lyrics were based on a 10 page document of reference material provided by Paul. This version is as recorded on the day i.e. before mixing and without overdubs, panning or effects applied.

Track 6: Left at the Lake - Field Recording One
Paul walking around the lake at Plantsbrook Nature Reserve, the site of an indeterminate encounter in the autumn of 2015. Recorded on 22 June 2023. The excerpt heard at the end of the song on the E.P. was slowed down slightly.

Track 7: Left at the Lake - Field Recording Two
Lesley walking at the waterside in the haunted grounds of Bagot's Castle. Recorded on 28 June 2023. The excerpt heard at the end of the song on the E.P. was slowed down slightly.
